What is ADFAC?ADFAC - ( Aid to Distressed Families of Appalachian Counties ) is an independent, nonprofit agency serving the charitable needs of Anderson, Campbell, Claiborne, Morgan, Roane and Scott counties. ADFAC's mission is to help families in urgent need with basic survival necessities and to preserve, improve, or replace existing substandard owner-occupied housing. ADFAC's goal is to restore pride and stability to neighborhoods. ADFAC offers the community an accountable and centralized system for distributing limited emergency aid funds in the most effective and caring way possible.Where is ADFAC Located?ADFAC's offices are located in rooms 103, 203, and 204 of the First Presbyterian Church Activities Building, 1051 Oak Ridge Turnpike, Oak Ridge, Tennessee. Space for ADFAC's offices is donated by the church.Who supports ADFAC?ADFAC is sponsored by more than 80 religious, civic, corporate, and community organizations. Federal, State, County, and City grant money supports ADFAC's housing program. ADFAC is an affiliate agency of the United Way of Anderson County. ADFAC is also a neighbor-to-neighbor program, receiving the support of many individuals who donate their funds and volunteer time to help their neighbors in need.Charitable contributionsBecause ADFAC is a recognized 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation, all donations of monies, goods, services and the like are considered to be charitable contributions for tax purposes and potential donors are encouraged to explore this avenue of giving.Please feel free to contact ADFAC for information on making contributions to the organization. |
What kind of help does ADFAC provide?Social servicesADFAC provides help to needy families with payment of rent, utilities, medicine, transportation and short-term food. We also furnish school supplies. ADFAC assists families in crisis by referring them to area resources such as food banks, shelters, and sources of donated clothing and furniture. A major emphasis is the prevention of homelessness.A variety of support services is offered, including budget and other counseling by two licensed clinical social workers. These services are aimed at encouraging families to help themselves toward long-term solutions. Utility assistanceADFAC helps families needing emergency assistance to obtain fuel or electricity for heating in the winter months. We administer Project SAFE and Project ASSIST, sponsored by the local utility companies as a way for neighbors to help neighbors through small contributions.Affordable Housing ServicesADFAC's Helping Hands program is a home repair, home-building program responding to the needs of economically disadvantaged homeowners. The Helping Hands program matches government grants with volunteer crews and local contractors to improve housing for the elderly, disabled, or low-income families. Our housing program has received many significant awards and continues to be one of the best owner-occupied rehabilitation programs in the State of Tennessee.ClearinghouseADFAC carefully screens all applicants to determine the most appropriate form of aid, and keeps confidential records of assistance to prevent duplication of effort. ADFAC accepts referrals from and coordinates charitable giving with many area religious and civic organizations. |
